War and Peace (2020)
Acrylic on canvas
Artist statement
Upon reading William Butler Yeats' poem, Innisfree, I often find inner peace by going into a safe place inside my mind. The setting of this painting is a depiction of my safe place for inner peace, a serene garden filled with lemon trees and aroma of honey in the air.
Struggling with the fundamental human emotion of internal moral conflict, self-loathing, guilt and shame, this painting is my self-portrait in wrestling with such human emotions whilst desperately looking for a peace of mind in my safe place.
