Stay Together for the Kids (2019)

Acrylic on canvas

I wanted to create the image of an unhappy marriage and an assigned gender role of motherhood upon women. This piece illustrates more than just the silent breakdown of a civil partnership where both the husband and wife persevere in the face of an unhappy marriage for the sake of their children. It is also a personal observation of how a woman was expected to keep her demeanour, role of a nurturing mother, obedient wife and the order of things in the household despite her worries and reluctance. Hence, the double entendre on the title “Stay Together for the Kids.” These unwanted and assigned gender roles are also often justified and celebrated as the “strength of a woman” or “the unspoken hardships of a mother”. This piece intends to probe the viewers to question the order of our patriarchal values and ponder if strength of femininity can be redefined and celebrated on our own terms.
