Artist Statement

‘Hanya Sejenak, final’(若隐若现,终) is the third art piece to Ranerrim’s art series, Hanya Sejenak, which comprises of three art pieces ‘Hanya Sejenak, part 1’(若隐若现 ,一), ‘Hanya Sejenak, part 2’ (若隐若现 ,二)and ‘Hanya Sejenak, final’(若因若现 ,终). The art series are interconnected and are a play on the malleability and fleeting nature of human memories. Hence, they cannot be explained in isolation.

‘Hanya Sejenak, part 1’ (若隐若现 ,一) is the completed surrealistic and dream-like painting of a person sleeping on a bed in a dusun where grew up and have fond childhood memories of. The window of the cityscape view is actually the only thing that grounds reality in the painting. The sleeping person is someone who is working abroad but reminiscing their childhood memories of their hometown. The fine details in the painting represent the vividity of tiny details in our memories. The lack of colouring in the painting and colour-blocked leaves and blankets represent the flawed and everchanging nature of the way we remember things despite the vivid details for other parts of our memories. For instance, do you remember what colour shirt you were wearing last Monday? A direct response to Jack Malik’s poetry of someone reminiscing the taste of rambutans and fond memories of their hometown, I combined my own memories and included my sister’s orange childhood blanket in the painting, weaving a story of homesickness and memories of home from the eyes of my sister who is working abroad.

‘Hanya Sejenak, part 2’ (若隐若现 ,二)is the completed painting of white brushstrokes over the first art piece. It represents “distant memories” where faint memories can still be seen through the white paint, just like a lot of the memories we have trouble reminiscing, we can only make out a vague shape of the memory when dwelling on a forgotten moment.

‘Hanya Sejenak, final’(若隐若现 ,终)is the performance piece which brought about the second piece of work. It represented the act of “forgetting” to remind ourselves that moments and memories are always fleeting.

Note: 若隐若现 is a mandarin idiom meaning when something appears to be hazy and shadow-like, almost like a mirage where one can only make out a vague shape from it, much like our distant memories.
